Every year in December the festival «Winter nights on the Amstel» offers the Dutch public unforgettable encounters with some pearls of Russian classical music, striking a perfect festive chord as a wonderful Christmas present for those who love chamber music.

The history of the event is closely associated with the name of Sviatoslav Richter, who founded the annual «December Nights» international music festival based in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. The great pianist had a vision that performing classical music in a museum lets the public feel the deep connection between different forms of art. This very idea directly inspired the organizers of «Winter Nights on the Amstel» to create a series of thematic concerts set in an art museum. Hermitage Amsterdam became the perfect venue due to its role as a cultural bridge between Russia and the Netherlands. The warm and welcoming atmosphere of the Church Hall (Kerkzaal) in the museum gives a new interpretation to the sound of the Russian chamber music.

«Winter Nights on the Amstel» won the hearts of the Dutch public. Sold out concerts and enthusiastic reactions in the media proved the success, the festival was well-received by the audiences, who got a chance to see some of the greatest performers such as Boris Berezovsky, Natalia Gutman and the Borodin Quartet live on stage. Also, very special concerts take place during the «Winter Nights on the Amstel» given by fine young virtuosos, talented children aged 9 to 14 from the Gnessin Music School in Moscow.

Festival guests also have access to the current exhibition displayed in the Hermitage Amsterdam in December; from 19:00 the museum doors open exclusively for them with no additional cost.
