Mikhail KHOKHLOV

Mikhail Khokhlov is one of the most noticeable figures of the community of professional teachers of musically gifted children. His awards include: Honored Art Worker of Russia, Honored Artist of Russia and Laureate of Presidential Award.

Born in Moscow in 1955, graduated as a pianist from the Gnessin Moscow Special School of Music with Prof. Valentina Aristova, and Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory with Prof. Vera Gornostayeva. Besides, Mikhail Khokhlov had symphonic conducting master classes with famous professors Yuri Simonov and Dmitry Kitaenko.

During 1980s he participated in numerous contemporary music festivals in Soviet Union as a pianist. He performed in major Russian musical centers and abroad (England, Austria, Germany, Israel, USA). Initially, he specialized in contemporary music and appeared as a soloist and with orchestras at various modern music festivals.

In 1987 Mikhail Khokhlov started his teaching career at the Gnessin Moscow Special School of Music.

Two years later Khokhlov was appointed the Principal of the Gnessin School which was recognized as the best School of Music in Russia in 1998.

In 1990 he formed the «Gnessin Virtuosi» Chamber Orchestra, in 2001 formed the ”Piazzolla-Quintet”.

He is a promoter and artistic director of  ”January Nights” Annual Festival of Arts for young musicians. Founded in 2007, it takes place at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

Mikhail Khokhlov is also a co-promoter of  ”Nutcracker” International TV Young Artists Competition which at first was based at the Gnessin School.
